Eyewitness’ TROJAN WOMEN is an adaptation (rather than a translation)
of Euripides’ original, spiced with certain historical morsels from Homer.
The action takes place in 1200 BC, after the abduction of Helen and the ensuing
conquest of Troy by a united Grecian army, led by King Agamemnon.
Much of Euripides tight, economic text remains – adapted, somewhat, to
a style that is acceptable to the modern ear but sufficiently removed to give
the play its proper perspective.*
Peter Mc Garry, Artistic Director says
Eyewitness returns to Winnipeg after a fringe abstinence of five years and we
were tempted to cook something light and calorie free rather then serve up a
harrowing Greek Tragedy that some might find difficult to digest. We do appreciate
that festival gourmets have a wide choice from the Fringe Carte de Jour –
there are lots of sweet, yummy comedies on that sweet trolley. We do know however
that there are more than a few discerning palates in Winnipeg that might want
to savour a dish marinated in the finest Classic Literature, served piping hot
with all the trimmings.
